Think about the initial presentation Sam, George, and Rameck hear about the program at Seton Hall. What were some of the benefits of this program? What were some of the sacrifices they would have to make to participate? Have you ever heard of programs like that? Would you ever consider being a part of such a program?
The initial presentation was about a Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Plus Program at Seton Hall, which was one of the program offer by the Educational Opportunity Program. The EOP assist urban and needy students in getting into college by finances specialized programs that provide money for tuition and housing, counseling, tutoring, assessment...etc.
ReplyDeleteI thought that they was pretty lucky, running into the initial presentation (it's like fate). I could imagine George, at the presentation, realizing the fact that this program is going to give him a big break, while helping him shaping his future. I also believe that this program encourage the pact, not only to get into college but also encourage them to dream big and to get them to jump start on their career path. Another benefit is that they get to stay together at Seton Hall!
Moving onto college and planning for a big future also mean letting go or giving up a few things. For example, Sam let go his neighborhood friends who had sets bad example for him in the first place and I'm pretty sure Rameck did too. George got rid of distractions that would prevent him to focus on his challenge, like his relationship with his high school sweetheart. Overall, they all (finally) made some good decisions in their lives.
I actually did participate in a program, very similar to the EOP, but this organization helps get kids into a private school and later on to privilege colleges. I've actually opt out of it, because of personal reasons. I did had a good experience, because of all those applications and interviews I went through, the process open my mind to what planning for college, as well as the future is going to be like... (not a relaxing one!)
Currently, I am on the lookout for a college program that I'm compatible with. I'm actually kind of jealous with the fact that George knows what he wants to be in life (that it came naturally to him). I heard from somewhere that when you realized your dreams, the world miraculously conspire you to your destination. Which theoretically speaking, led George to the opportunity of a lifetime (which has to be the program at Seton Hall) I think for me; I'm one of those who have to go find what's out there for me.
"I just knew that I wanted more out of my life, even if I couldn't quire define what more I wanted." pg.91 paragraph 5.
Sam took the words from my mouth.
Cam Tu pretty much got it right on the money, I like how you said that when you realize your dreams, life kinda leads you to your destination, that is true sometimes. However, most people (like me) have to work hard to make their dreams become a reality. But George's dream just came to him naturally, and he worked hard for it as well.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you 100%! like you and cam said you have to realize your dreams and life leads you to them. I think that is very true but I also think some people have it easier then others and some have to work hard their whole life in order to accomplish it. I think like I for one will have to work very hard in order to be successful in life and go to where I would like to go, for example college I would like to go to Princeton college and make something of myself. :)
