RESPONSE QUESTION- SECTION 5- pages 195-239

Sam does not pass the state-board exam right away. What keeps him going? Why doesn’t he give up? What would you do in a similar situation?

  1. The reason why Sam keeps going/doesn't give up, is because for the past 6 years he had worked on, comes to that one exam. I wouldn't give up so easily either. If I were to have worked for so many years and came down to the "one exam" and found out I have failed somehow, it would be a waste if I were to give up. I would take my second chance of taking the exam, and I would try to do better.

  2. When Sam did not pass the state-board exam, he was devastated by the news. By not passing, it made him feel like an absolute failure. He felt isolated, just as he did when he first arrived in his new school environment. However, Sam knew that he could not just give up and let it all go to a complete waste. He had to persevere and strive with the help and continual comfort and support of his close friends. Sam began going to the library early in the morning and studied. He studied with two girls who had also failed the exam. Another stronghold for Sam was to talk with counselors for needed advice on why he failed and what lessons he could derive from it.
If I were in this situation, I would not give up hope. I would persevere to reach and accomplish my goal. Another way to get through this situation would be to follow Sam's three D's: Determination, discipline, and dedication. I would also continue to persevere because I would know that things are mapped out for me from a cool person from above!

  3. I agree with Sisca 100% I,too, would not give up. I would take my second chance and try even harder not to fail the exam. It would be a waste of six years just to give up when one thing does not go my way. I would not give up and just press and press until I reach my goal!

  4. I agree with Marchylia and Justin because if that were me and i was in his shoes I would not give up. I work to hard to get to the point of success and i would try again. I would try my hardest and i would work my butt off to make sure i won't fail again. Although i would probably be down because i failed, just as Sam had his close friends and counselors to be there for him and help him, i would have the same encouragement and i would take it all in to help get me motivated to try again and do better.

  5. I agree with Justine, being persevere toward your goal keeps you going. Also seeking help whenever needed is always a good idea. There's always people around you to help motivate you and accompany you through tough times.

  6. I agree with Justin and Sisca. I would never give up, everyone learn from their mistakes. If I were to fail an exam, I know better to try even harder so I won't fail the next time. Like Justin said, I would not give up 6 years of my life just because I failed one exam. Failing an exam just mean, I didn't try hard enough.

    I agree with Cam Tu.
Sam didn't give up and kept going because when he thought about giving up he thought of the past six years that he worked so hard. It all dawned upon him that he should keep going.

I would do the same thing in a similar situation. I would not give up so easy after all the hard work I put into it.
